One Wet Bug

One Wet Bug

Insects (Class Insecta) are a major group of arthropods and the most diverse group of animals on the Earth, with over a million described species—more than half of all known living organisms with published estimates of undescribed species as high as 30 million, thus potentially representing over 90% of the life forms on the planet. Insects may be found in nearly all environments on the planet, although only a small number of species occur in the oceans where crustaceans tend to predominate instead

The Amazing Dry Ice Experiment

One of our readers just sent in an interesting (scientific) video clip that shows what happens when you combine dry ice with liquid soap. Watch after the jump.

Dry ice is produced by compressing carbon dioxide gas to a liquid form, removing the heat produced by the compression (see Charles's law), and then letting the liquid carbon dioxide expand quickly. This expansion and the high-speed evaporation of carbon dioxide gas cools the remainder of the liquid down to the melting point, where some of the CO2 freezes into 'snow,' which is then compressed into pellets or blocks

Billions of Zimbabwe Dollars and Zimbabwe Inflation in 2008

Zimbabwe inflation rate reached outstanding 2,000,000% (even more probably) in 2008. For me it’s really hard to image such stupid thing happening to country’s economy. For such a bad Zimbabwe’s situation is responsible Robert Mugabe (president) and his government. They just keep issuing bigger and bigger bills. And I have to say, denominations got ridiculously big: the latest was Z$ 100 000 000 000. And all this happened in the last couple years. Funny things is, that the government has announced a longer-term plan to dispense with the zeroes entirely, turning $10 billion into $1. And then what? $1 to $1billion once again?

On May 15, 2008, it was announced that five hundred million dollar bearer cheques were to be issued as of May 20. It was also announced that agro cheques in the amounts of 5, 25, and 50 billion dollars would be issued on the same day. All of these will be dated to expire at the end of 2008.

World's Largest Butterfly

The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) is a large saturniid moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, southern China, common across the Malay archipelago, Thailand to Indonesia.

In India, Atlas moths are cultivated for their silk in a non-commercial capacity; unlike that produced by the related Silkworm moth (Bombyx mori), Atlas moth silk is secreted as broken strands. This brown, wool-like silk is thought to have greater durability and is known as fagara. Atlas moth cocoons have been employed as purses in Taiwan.

Atlas moths are considered to be the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area (upwards of c. 400 square cm or 65 square inches). Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, from 25-30 cm (10-12 inches). Females are appreciably larger and heavier.

Atlas moths are said to be named after either the Titan of Greek mythology, or their map-like wing patterns. In Hong Kong the Cantonese name translates as "snake's head moth", referring to apical extension of the forewing, which bears a passing resemblance to a snake's head.

Atlas moths are predominantly tawny to maroon in colour with roughly triangular, diaphanous "eyes" on both forewing and hindwing, bordered in black. The purpose of these dramatic, gossamer portals is not clear, but they are thought to play a role in predator avoidance. Their bodies are hairy and disproportionately small compared to their wings.
